Not All Mushroom Powders Are Created Equal
Functional mushrooms are showing up in everything right now — coffee, cacao, gummies, capsules, and drink mixes. But the real question is: what kind of mushrooms are actually being used?
That part matters. Some products use high-quality mushroom extracts with clear testing and transparent labels. Others use basic mushroom powder, proprietary blends, or mycelium grown on grain, where it can be hard to know how much actual mushroom material you are getting.
At Chai Chai Love, we wanted to do this differently. Our mushroom blend is made with organic fruiting-body mushroom extracts from a trusted, family-owned mushroom supplier with more than 40 years of experience in mushroom cultivation and extraction.
That means every serving includes clearly measured mushroom extracts — not mystery powders, starch-heavy fillers, or vague “proprietary blend” language.
Why Fruiting Body Extracts Matter
The fruiting body is the part most people recognize as the mushroom. It is also the part traditionally used in many culinary and wellness traditions around the world.
Many lower-cost mushroom products use mycelium on grain, often called MOG. Mycelium is the root-like structure of the mushroom, and when it is grown on grain, the finished ingredient may still contain a significant amount of grain substrate, such as oats or rice.
That does not automatically make every mycelium product bad, but it does make transparency important. If a product does not clearly list beta-glucan content, fruiting body source, or testing details, it can be difficult to know what you are actually getting.
Chai Chai Love uses 100% fruiting-body mushroom extracts — no mycelium on grain, no starch fillers, and no vague mushroom blend with undisclosed amounts.
Our Mushroom Supplier
Our mushroom extracts come from one of the most experienced companies in the mushroom industry, founded by Jeff Chilton, a longtime mushroom cultivation expert who has been working with mushrooms since the 1970s.
We chose this supplier because they focus on the details that matter: proper species identification, fruiting-body extracts, beta-glucan testing, and quality verification.
For us, this is about trust. If we are going to include functional mushrooms in our chai, we want to know where they come from, how they are processed, and what is actually in each serving.
What We Test For
Every mushroom extract we use is selected for transparency, quality, and consistency. Our mushroom extracts are tested for:
- Beta-glucan content
- Identity and quality
- Heavy metals
- Pesticides and contaminants
- Fruiting-body source
Our current mushroom extracts include:
- Reishi — more than 40% beta-glucans
- Lion’s Mane — more than 42% beta-glucans
- Cordyceps — more than 10% beta-glucans
- Chaga — more than 10% beta-glucans
Beta-glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides found in mushrooms and other foods. They are one of the main compounds people look for when choosing functional mushroom products, which is why we believe they should be clearly listed and verified.
Real Mushroom Extracts vs. Basic Mushroom Powders
| What to Compare | Chai Chai Love Mushroom Extracts | Many Basic Mushroom Powders |
|---|---|---|
| Source | 100% fruiting-body mushroom extracts | May use raw mushroom powder or mycelium grown on grain |
| Processing | Hot-water extracted | Often raw powder or minimally processed |
| Beta-Glucans | Listed and verified | Often not listed or not clearly disclosed |
| Fillers | No mycelium on grain, no starch fillers | May contain grain substrate or added starch |
| Testing | Tested for identity, quality, and contaminants | Testing details may be limited or unavailable |
| Amount Per Serving | 1,000mg total mushroom extract blend per serving | Amounts may be unclear, especially in proprietary blends |
What About “Full Spectrum” Mushroom Products?
You may see some mushroom products described as “full spectrum.” That phrase can sound impressive, but it is not always clearly defined.
Sometimes “full spectrum” means the product includes both fruiting body and mycelium. Other times, it may mean mycelium grown on grain, where the grain substrate remains in the final product.
The issue is not the phrase itself — it is the lack of clarity. A product can sound complete while still failing to tell you the most important details:
- Is it fruiting body, mycelium, or both?
- Is there grain substrate in the finished ingredient?
- Is the beta-glucan content listed?
- Are the mushrooms extracted or simply powdered?
- Are the ingredients third-party tested?
That is why we keep our mushroom sourcing straightforward: organic fruiting-body extracts, clearly measured, with beta-glucan content listed.
Why Hot-Water Extraction Matters
Mushrooms have tough cell walls made with chitin. Traditional mushroom preparations often involved heat, simmering, or extraction because water and heat help pull out water-soluble compounds from the mushroom material.
That is the same basic idea behind a good cup of tea. You do not chew dry tea leaves and expect the same experience as steeping them in hot water. Heat helps draw out flavor, color, aroma, and plant compounds.
With mushrooms, hot-water extraction is commonly used to concentrate water-soluble compounds like beta-glucans. This creates a more refined ingredient than simply grinding dried mushrooms into powder.
For Chai Chai Love, that fits naturally with how chai is meant to be made: slowly, with heat, water, spices, and time.
The Four Mushrooms in Chai Chai Love
Each serving of Chai Chai Love includes 1,000mg total organic mushroom extract blend, made with four mushrooms: Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, and Chaga.
Lion’s Mane
Lion’s Mane is one of the most well-known functional mushrooms and is often discussed in relation to clarity, focus, and cognitive wellness. We use an organic fruiting-body extract with more than 42% beta-glucans.
Cordyceps
Cordyceps has a long history of traditional use and is often associated with vitality and active living. We use an organic fruiting-body extract with more than 10% beta-glucans.
Reishi
Reishi has been valued for centuries in traditional wellness practices and is known for its naturally bitter, earthy character. We use an organic fruiting-body extract with more than 40% beta-glucans.
Chaga
Chaga is traditionally prepared as a tea and is known for its deep color and naturally occurring plant compounds. We use an organic extract with more than 10% beta-glucans.
We do not add mushrooms because they are trendy. We add them because they fit the deeper intention behind Chai Chai Love: real ingredients, thoughtful sourcing, and a daily ritual made with care.
What to Look for in a Mushroom Product
If you are comparing mushroom products, here are a few things worth checking before you buy:
Look For:
- Fruiting-body extracts, not just vague “mushroom powder”
- Beta-glucan percentages listed clearly
- No mycelium on grain, if you are trying to avoid starch-heavy mushroom ingredients
- Hot-water extraction or clear extraction method
- Third-party testing for quality and contaminants
- Transparent serving amounts, not just a proprietary blend
Be Careful With:
- Products that only say “mushroom powder” with no extraction details
- Labels that do not list beta-glucans
- Proprietary blends that do not show how much of each mushroom is included
- Big promises without sourcing or testing information
- “Full spectrum” language without a clear explanation of what that means
Why We Put Mushrooms in Chai
Chai already has a long relationship with plants, spices, and daily ritual. Ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, fennel, turmeric, and black pepper have been used for generations in Indian kitchens and Ayurvedic tradition.
Functional mushrooms felt like a natural extension of that same idea: ingredients from nature, prepared with care, and enjoyed as part of everyday life.
Chai Chai Love is not instant chai, mushroom coffee, or a sugary latte mix. It is organic mushroom chai made with whole spices, mushroom extracts, and no added sugar — crafted to be simmered slowly so the flavor becomes rich, warming, and full.
A Note About Benefits and Research
Functional mushrooms are widely studied for their naturally occurring compounds, including beta-glucans, polysaccharides, triterpenes, and other mushroom-specific compounds. They also have a long history of traditional use in food and wellness practices.
At the same time, we believe in being honest. Mushrooms are not magic, and Chai Chai Love is not a medicine. Research is still developing, and individual experiences can vary.
That is why we focus on what we can stand behind: organic ingredients, fruiting-body mushroom extracts, clear serving amounts, beta-glucan testing, and real chai flavor.
